After a prolonged and extensive study of the Konkan region primarily the Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts, based on firm technical, agricultural and climatic parameters, PCPL has decided to propagate Rubber cultivation probably the only plant species whose produce is a basic and critical raw material for a large number of industries apart from its biggest use in the manufacture of automobile tyres.

With demand far outstripping supply and prices on the upswing consistently over the last 25 years it makes eminent sense to promote the cultivation of this plant species both as an investment as well as making the country self sufficient in this very important raw material.

History of Rubber Plantation in India (Past):

• Rubber Plantation is a proven agro industry in Kerala and is one of the mainstays of the economy of the state - almost 90% of the raw rubber production in India comes from Kerala
• Ministry of commerce has established rubber board to promote, regulate and organize rubber cultivation in India
• Demand: supply gap historically shows a shortfall of 10 to 12% annually
• Six years is the cultivation period and tapping commences from 7th year onwards
• Coastal Maharashtra & Tripura offer climate & soil similar to Kerala and is suited for rubber cultivation
• Demand for rubber has been steadily rising over the years and is expected to be on the upswing in the coming years too and prices of raw rubber have doubled in the last decade

Rubber Plantation in India-Maharashtra (Present):

• High cost of land and lack of larger land parcels is making rubber cultivation unviable in Kerala
• In Maharashtra area between Goa border and Ratnagiri is suitable for rubber plantation and is approved by the rubber board and Maharashtra government is promoting cultivation of rubber in these areas
• Proximity : just 200 kms away from Pune and 400 kms from Mumbai
• More than 10 locations with climatic and soil conditions similar to Kerala identified in Ratnagiri district
• Rubber plantation was not developed in Maharashtra mainly due to the reasons such as non availability of large area for plantation at one place, plantation labor and long gestation period of about seven years from plantation for getting the yield
• A few farms have been successfully developed in this region in the past few years
• Each farm expected to be between 50 to 100 hectares (125 to 250 acres) plus and investors can invest in multiples of 5 hectares
• Approved by rubber board and government of Maharashtra

Rubber Plantation

• PCPL intends to develop about 1000 hectares of Rubber Plantation near Rajapur – Ratnagiri Dist.- Maharashtra
• Plantation in one acre consists of 200 plants i.e. approx. 500 plants per hectare
• Government subsidy available up to a maximum of 10 hectares in the name of one single person
• Rubber board grants a subsidy of Rs. 36,000 per hectare and the Maharashtra government grants Rs.45, 000 per hectare as subsidy spread over the first 6 years of cultivation
• Rubber tappings commence from the 7th year onwards. The yield continues for 25 years after which the replantation is done in the 33rd year
• The expected annual yield from each hectare of rubber cultivation from the 7th year onwards ranges between 1500 kgs to 2500 kgs
• The trees cut after 32 years of cultivation fetch good prices as the same is sold as rubber wood and is very popular for manufacturing household furniture
